Ensuring Today Leads to a Sustainable Tomorrow

Earth Day gives us all the opportunity to raise awareness, reflect and take action to support a sustainable future. The day, which offers so many ways to get involved, means many things to different people.

Fortunately, in the data infrastructure business, there are many areas where we can make improvements to support resilience, efficiency and optimization. At Hitachi Vantara, we’re committed to the principles of sustainability and responsible business practices. That’s why we're proud to share today, on Earth Day, the advancements we’ve made in these areas of critical importance.

Our DNA

A commitment to people and the planet is part of our DNA at Hitachi. Hitachi Vantara sees building innovative, sustainability-focused products as an imperative for competitiveness, financial growth and business longevity. With the explosion of AI and data, energy use is continuously rising. That’s why we’re doubling down on our commitments within environmental, social and governance (ESG) by announcing our expansion from seven goals to 18.

We’re releasing our second annual Hitachi Vantara Sustainability Report, covering our fiscal year 2024. This new report details the progress we’ve made in our operations as well as our products and services. Our goal in publishing this report is not just to celebrate our accomplishments but also to share our dedication and engage and inspire others to commit to their own sustainability practices.

Sustainable Infrastructure

At Hitachi Vantara, we have a deeply held belief in innovation that’s driven us to constantly improve our AI-driven hybrid cloud data storage products. As AI usage has grown, companies are seeking to manage their energy use in their data centers and infrastructure through higher efficiency and lower energy solutions. This is critical since AI data center needs for power are growing exponentially. We’re addressing this requirement and opportunity by creating innovative products that minimize environmental impact, without sacrificing performance. This helps our customers with decarbonization for infrastructure, data and analytics while moving their businesses forward. In one customer example, we reduced energy consumption by 30%. In addition, Hitachi Vantara has secured top ENERGY STAR rankings for performance and energy efficiency, with the top two rankings for the most energy efficient storage systems in the ENERGY STAR NVSS Disk Online 4 category.

We also seek to practice these principles in our own facilities. Our cutting edge solar-powered distribution center in the Netherlands generates about 30% of its electricity from on-site solar, with the remaining electricity sourced from verified Energy Attribute Certificates. This means the entire center operates on renewable energy.

In terms of energy management and greenhouse gas emissions, we’ve made significant progress on our goal of becoming carbon neutral in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by FY2030 by increasing our renewable energy usage from 19% to 35%. We have also added a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality throughout our value chain by FY2050.

Reducing Waste

Increasing our use of recycled materials is part of our goal of reducing waste and increasing sustainability. As part of this commitment, we’ve currently achieved 40% recycled material, by weight, of the new VSP One Block and File bezels and plan to achieve 50% usage by FY2030.

We’ve also committed to diverting 90% (by weight) of our total e-waste from landfill through remanufacturing, reuse and recycling by FY2030, while diverting 100% (by weight) of total e-waste at our distribution centers by FY2030. Finally, we’ve committed to 100% of our packaging being made from recyclable or reusable material by FY2030.

Conclusion

Sustainability is not just a “nice to have” for our customers and partners. It’s foundational for their businesses to address costs, resilience and competitiveness.

We don’t see sustainability as another fad but as something that will only increase in importance. It’s been a fundamental part of Hitachi’s growth as a business for years and we intend to build on that strength in the years ahead.

On behalf of Hitachi Vantara, we want to wish you a meaningful Earth Day. By reflecting on our impact and renewing our commitments, we can help make the world a better place, together.
